Villiera Wines
This friendly, extended-family vineyard is both specialist and all-rounder, producing shining examples of everything from classic bubblies to Bordeaux-style reds, Loire-toned Chenin, Riesling and Gewürztraminer with a waft of the Rhine, modern local hero Pinotage and even Port - all with a New South African accent.
Distinctive character and unfailing quality are hallmarks throughout, stamping even the jolly quaffers in the range with class. But perhaps star of the show - currently – is Villiera's striking Sauvignon Blanc, which earned Jeff Grier, South Africa's hotly contested Diners Club Winemaker of the Year (1997) award.
In the past 20 years, cousin and vineyardist Simon Grier, has elevated the fruit-quality of the 250 ha vineyards, through specialized practices in an environmentally responsible manner. This has paid dividends - benefiting Villiera consumers and its workers.
Prices remain as accessible as the wines, despite Jeff Grier's strings of local and international awards. Super-sound but never dull, adventurous without gimmickry, Villiera's wines encapsulate both excitement and complete reliability.
