Reyneke Organic Wines
Reyneke Organic Wines is situated in the Polkadraai hills outside Stellenbosch. The original homestead dates back to 1863. The terroir of this 35ha farm ranges from 250 – 350m above sea level and has north easterly, easterly and south easterly facing granitic soils overlooking False Bay. Their emphasis on quality has ensured that since 1988, the vineyards have systematically been replanted with appropriate noble cultivars. This process has been done in close working relationship with the University of Stellenbosch. The public face of Reyneke Organic Wines is Johan Reyneke. Down to earth and wholesome, this philosophy post-grad is endlessly fascinated by the relationship between man and environment. This fascination manifests itself in two unique ways. Firstly, Uitzicht farm is known as one of very few empowerment initiatives, where the workers were the architects of the master plan. Secondly, all vineyards are managed according to biodynamic principles. In organic viticulture no harmful herbicides, pesticides or fungicides are allowed. The emphasis is on long term sustainability and land stewardship. In biodynamic viticulture, certified organic status is the essential prerequisite. In addition, three variables are implemented. Firstly, a holistic view is taken of the farm as a ‘living organism’. The aim here is to encourage all forms of life (plants, animals and humans) on the farm to flourish in a rich diversity. Secondly, some herbal preparations (yarrow, chamomile, valerian, stinging nettle, etc.) are used in homeopathic quantities to foster plant and animal vitality and longevity. In the last instance, a planting and pruning calendar is adhered to which ensures harmony with the natural rhythms and cycles that influence all life processes on the farm.
