Landskroon
The wines of Paul and Hugo de Villiers. The vineyards of Landskroon extend along the slopes of Paarl Mountain, facing southwards towards the Atlantic Ocean. Deep weathered granite soils and cooling afternoon breezes combine to create a microclimate ideally suited to the cultivation of noble grape varieties. The estate's tradition dates back to the late 17th century and current cellarmaster, Paul de Villiers, is a member of the 9th generation to be involved with winemaking at the Cape. Paul's younger brother, Hugo de Villiers (Jr) attends to the never-ending challenges of producing quality in the 300 ha vineyards. This historic farm has recently witnessed some extensive renovations. In 2005 a new barrel maturation cellar with improved temperature and humidity control was inaugurated. The construction of a completely new bottled wine cellar followed soon after and then the bottling and labeling line was modernized to facilitate, amongst others, the introduction of newly designed self-adhesive labels and screwcaps. Recent plantings of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are set to uphold Landskroon's reputation for good-value big reds and ports. "All these activities seem to have introduced a breath of fresh air into our wines," says marketing manager, Huguette van der Merwe.
