Goede Hoop Estate
Goede Hoop wine estate is situated off the old road between the towns of Stellenbosch and Kuils River, deep in the valley, known as the Bottelary Kloof. The old farmhouse, rich in atmosphere, was built in 1880. In 1928 the Bestbier Family purchased the wine estate, and today, Pieter Bestbier is the third generation winemaker on Goede Hoop Estate.
Every square metre of the 120ha wine estate is situated on the slopes of the valley and about 80ha have been planted with vines facing mainly north and north-west; 250 metres separate the lowest and highest vineyards, as a result of this, meso-climates abound, the temperature and rainfall differences between these vineyards are considerable. The horseshoe-shaped vineyards also ensure the right hours of sunshine for every variety.
Most of the vineyards are dry land and only about 20ha are irrigated. The rainfall, under normal conditions, is sufficient at between 600 and 900mm per annum. In summer a south-easter breeze keeps the vineyard cool. These conditions – the climate, as well as the quality of the soil - are ideal for producing wines of high quality.
On the crest of the hills are the weathered remains of granite outcrops. The surrounding soil is ideal for vineyard cultivation, especially red wine, because the moisture retaining sub-soils keep the vine roots cool, even in summer. The Cabernet Sauvignon are planted in these soils, the Merlot and Shiraz are planted at a higher altitude in deep Red Hutton soil. Sauvignon Blanc is planted in the cooler areas on the Estate.
Goede Hoop has received numerous awards over the years from Wine of The Month Club, Wine Magazine, Winelands, Veritas, Michelangelo International Awards, Wild Festival Netherlands, SA Trophy Wine Show, KLM Grand Services Netherlands, Swiss International Airline Awards.
