Fundi
Here's a great example of an industry pulling together: Fundi is named for the Zulu word umfundi, which means "learner" and with good reason. Proceeds from the sale of these premium reds will go towards training more than 2 000 previously disadvantaged people as wine stewards in time for the FIFA World Cup in 2010. The wines themselves were chosen by the Cape Winemakers Guild from samples submitted, and the wine industry sponsored or subsidised everything from dry goods and legal work to bottling and publicity. The result is a fabulous premium red wine, selling at a great price while generating a significant contribution to the training with every bottle sold. The label features a sunflower as a symbol of hope. A unique feature of the brand is a beaded decoration which hangs around the neck of the bottle. These are colour coded and can be collected and used to identify individual glasses. Using beads is another aspect to create additional employment. Recommended retail price for restaurants will be R150 per bottle incl. VAT and R120 per bottle incl. VAT for retailers. For every 10 six-bottle cases of wine bought, an establishment will be able to send one of their previously disadvantage staff members to attend the Fundi Wine Course. With the wine course the aim is to expose a new and potentially influential group to wine and increase local wine sales in the long term. The courses are SETA accredited.
